Universitas Internasional Batam (UIB), through its International Relations Office (IRO), successfully conducted an international collaborative program entitled Design Thinking with Ming Chi University of Technology (MCUT) 2025 as part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen global academic partnerships. The program was held on 24th October 2025 in Batam, Indonesia, and involved students and faculty members from UIB and Ming Chi University of Technology, Taiwan. This initiative was designed to foster international learning experiences by integrating academic exploration, cultural immersion, and collaborative innovation. The activity also reflected UIB’s commitment to providing meaningful global exposure for its academic community.

The first day of the program was dedicated to a field observation activity combined with a batik-making session at Kampung Seni Batam, a local cultural and creative arts village. This activity served as an introduction to Indonesian cultural heritage while offering participants a direct observation of community-based creative industries. Through hands-on batik-making, participants gained insights into traditional techniques, cultural values, and the role of local communities in preserving and sustaining cultural assets. The experience allowed students to connect theoretical perspectives with real-world cultural practices.

This cultural observation was intentionally positioned as a foundational stage of the design thinking approach applied throughout the program. Students from both universities were encouraged to observe, empathize, and identify potential issues and opportunities related to cultural sustainability and creative industry development. The immersive setting enabled participants to understand local contexts more deeply, which is essential in developing relevant and impactful solutions. Such experiential learning strengthened students’ analytical skills and cultural sensitivity.

Participants in the program came from diverse academic backgrounds, creating a rich interdisciplinary environment. The MCUT delegation consisted of students from both undergraduate and postgraduate programs, particularly in business and management-related fields. Meanwhile, UIB students represented the Faculty of Business and Management, including Accounting, Management, Tourism, and Master of Management programs. This diversity enhanced cross-disciplinary dialogue and encouraged the exchange of varied perspectives during discussions and observations.

Beyond academic learning, the batik-making and observation activities promoted meaningful intercultural interaction between UIB and MCUT students. Working together in a collaborative and informal setting allowed participants to build mutual understanding and strengthen interpersonal connections. These interactions supported the development of global teamwork skills, which are essential in today’s increasingly interconnected academic and professional environments. The activity also created a positive atmosphere that encouraged open communication and shared learning.

The International Relations Office of UIB viewed the first-day activities as a crucial foundation for the subsequent stages of the program, including workshops and the Design Thinking Competition held on the following day. By starting with cultural immersion and observation, participants were better prepared to develop ideas that were contextually grounded and socially relevant. This structured approach ensured that innovation was rooted in real experiences rather than abstract concepts.

Overall, the cultural observation and batik-making activity at Kampung Seni Batam demonstrated the strong commitment of UIB and MCUT to advancing international education through experiential and collaborative learning. The program not only strengthened institutional ties between the two universities but also contributed to the development of globally minded students who are capable of integrating cultural understanding into innovative thinking. Such initiatives are expected to pave the way for sustainable academic collaboration and future joint programs between UIB and MCUT.
