Demonstrating its continued commitment to advancing sustainable education and fostering global academic collaboration, Universitas Internasional Batam (UIB), Indonesia, took part in the SDGs and Higher Education Congress held in Istanbul, Türkiye, in June 2025. The international gathering convened higher education leaders from various countries to explore the role of universities in realizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through research, education, and community engagement.
During the congress, UIB was represented by Assoc. Prof. Rina Shahriyani Shahrullah, Ph.D., who actively participated in the discussions surrounding the role of higher education in achieving the 2030 Agenda. The event served as a platform for international academic cooperation, knowledge exchange, and the establishment of sustainable partnerships.
One of the key milestones of UIB’s participation was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Universitas Internasional Batam and Gulf University, Bahrain, aimed at strengthening collaboration in the areas of education, research, and community engagement (Tri Dharma Perguruan Tinggi). The MoU outlines cooperation in faculty and student mobility, joint research, and capacity-building programs focused on SDG-aligned initiatives.
During the congress, Assoc. Prof. Rina Shahriyani Shahrullah, Ph.D., had the opportunity to meet and discuss directly with the Rector of Gulf University, Bahrain. The meeting emphasized both institutions’ shared commitment to producing globally competent graduates who are socially responsible and sustainability-minded.
“Global partnerships are essential to transforming higher education in alignment with the SDGs,” said Assoc. Prof. Rina Shahriyani Shahrullah, Ph.D. “This congress not only provided insight into best practices, but also paved the way for meaningful collaboration between UIB and Gulf University that will benefit both students and communities.” She added, “UIB is proud to contribute to the internationalization of higher education through cooperative strategies that integrate education, research, and community service for sustainable impact.”
The participation of Universitas Internasional Batam in the SDGs and Higher Education Congress marks another important step in expanding its international network and reaffirming its role in promoting global citizenship and academic excellence. With the signing of the MoU and strategic dialogue with Gulf University, UIB continues to position itself as a proactive player in global education transformation efforts aligned with the SDGs.
